This Erie Radio Schedule appeared in the Erie Morning News in August of 1974. Being a long-time fan of local radio, I recognized quite a few of the disc jockeys listed here, such as Frank Martin ("The Morning Mayor"), Ronnie Gee (Ron Seggi), Joey Stevens (later a TV weatherman), Bill Shannon, Tim Earl (another TV weather forecaster) and Ken Olowin.
WERG was the new kid on the block, broadcasting on 89.1 FM. It later moved from 89.9 to its present home at 90.5
A couple of the stations had early sign off times; WMDI cut out at 1 a.m., while WQLN and WERG went off at 2 a.m. WHYP would sometimes unintentionally sign off during the day, and the needle would be stuck in the locked groove at the end of a record for minutes on end.
One of my favorites was Al Knight, or Big Al Knight, All Night, Every Night. I think the interns must have cut their teeth on the overnight shift putting in carts of the pre-recorded voice of "Al Knight" occasionally between songs.
I can still hear some of the jingles in my head. Fun times!

WMDI-FM Erie, PA Started by Pentagon physicist?
WMDI-FM started by Pentagon physicist?
![]() |
WMDI article was published in the Erie Press on Dec. 12, 1970 |
Was WMDI-FM, Erie's underground rock station, really started by a physicist who worked at the Pentagon? Yes, it really was.
Donald Mikovch built a station at the intersection of Waterford Road and Route 86 in Erie County, Pennsylvania in the winter of 1970. According to the Erie Press, WMDI was "the new home of soft, velvet sounds and hard, in-depth reporting."
WMDI was owned by Mikro-Dawn, Inc. It's officers included Donald Mikovch, president, Conrad Clark, VP, Ronald Lang, treasurer and Wanda Mikovch, secretary.
William Stanley was news director, Art Desin was advertising and sales manager. Keith Brown, Bernie Nitoff, G. Randall Stoddard and Leo Kehs were the on-air announcers.
WMDI-FM 102.3 transformed into the 'stoned stereo' station that played underground rock and hard rock tunes in the mid-seventies.
Micro-Dawn Inc. sold WMDI-FM to Ron Seggi in the summer of 1980 for $465,000. "Seller is principally owned by Donald L. Mikovch, who has no other broadcast interests. Buyer is owned by Ronald, Guy and Sam Seggi, brothers (one-third each). Ronald owns Erie, Pa., advertising and public relations company. Sam and Guy operate construction business, also in Erie. They have no other broadcast interests. WMDI is on 102.3 mhz with 3 kw and antenna 400 feet above average terrain." -Broadcasting, Aug. 4, 1980, p.54.
Seggi later moved the station to Peach Street in Erie, PA and changed the format to MOR.

Soul Q Survey Feb. 19, 1977 WQLN-FM OIC
Soul Q Survey Feb. 19, 1977 WQLN OIC studio
This Soul Q survey is a little ragged, but still a cool piece of Erie radio history. Soul Q aired seven days a week on WQLN-FM, and was produced at the OIC studio at 1503 German Street. Denise Williams' song "Free" was number one for the week of February 19, 1977.
Soul Q ran until 1979, when Bobby "K" Kaigler joined Homer "Lee" Smith on Super Soul Saturday, broadcast each week on WERG-FM. Click here for a more complete history of Super Soul Saturday.
When the guys were shooting hoops at McKinley Park or on the basketball court at 23rd and Ash, it was a given that the boom box was blasting the latest soul or R&B hits.
