Sally (real name Sarah)was in charge of the carhops. She and I became fast friends. We worked hard but it was a fun job and we took pride in our cute, clean, blue and white uniforms as well as our fast and thorough service ....AND really fine freshly prepared foods. We did indeed have trays that attached to the bottom of the window frame of the car...and we had terrific lap trays for full meals. BUT there were NO ROLLER SKATES! I left there when my husband and I, along with our 4 young children, moved to California...probably one of the smartest things we ever did. I have fond memories of my time working there, of my friendship with Sally, of the good food and of waiting on some wonderful people. A couple of months before I left there to move to CA a man and his 2 (or maybe 3) sons came in sometimes for dinner. They were so very nice and they always wanted me to wait on them (we did not have stations...we all worked the entire lot). He and his boys and I always kidded around in a respectful way and one day they told me that their nickname for me was their "blue pants special"! Yeah...I loved working there!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2410297566472541708.post-21475226168118690792016-09-29T16:17:56.866-04:002016-09-29T16:17:56.866-04:00My brother worked there in the late 60's early...My brother worked there in the late 60's early 70's!Helennoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2410297566472541708.post-61355974174442199932016-09-26T14:41:59.283-04:002016-09-26T14:41:59.283-04:00+1 another Tillsonburg native that listened. The first one when the father ran it was located on Peninsula Drive. Then it relocated to the old RAX location on Peach or 12th if my memory is correct. I believe the son Marco was running it then. Many trips back to Erie in recen years and it appears to have closed nobody I have asked remembers it. So sad, the food was good and the Lupo family treated everyone like family. I remember being there with a friend in 1982 and when she didn't finish all of her pasta and sausage, Mr. Lupo asked her if everything was ok? She explained that she was full (they did give large portions). Mr. Lupo then turned to me and asked, what's the matter with you? Can't you eat it? I thought I was at my aunt's house. Then a number of us another year decided to have a going away dinner for two college friends. The Lupo family treated us excellently. I loved the Pollo de Parmigiana and the expresso. The expresso machine itself was quite impressive. I would love to learn that they may have relocated as opposed to having closed.Garyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01064082347169142366noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2410297566472541708.post-75662470643765443442016-08-21T17:45:36.546-04:002016-08-21T17:45:36.546-04:00I spent two summers at GLC and enjoyed it very muc...I spent two summers at GLC and enjoyed it very much. The Lifeboat station was used as the Cafeteria and still had the rails down the bluff to the lake. The campers stayed in buildings named after Indian tribes (Seneca, Iroquois etc.) Uniforms were worn with white shirts and white pants with an orange stripe military style that in my case were purchased at Hornes in Pittsburgh.... Activites included Riflery, Archery and crafts to mention a few. Somewhere, I have photos of the camp... St. Bens was more than just a school to me and to most of my friends that went there. You were part of a big huge family that looked out not only for you but taught you how to look out for the world and to try to make it a better place. I have such sweet fond memories of St. Ben's. I have recently ran into a few of my classmates and it has been wonderful. We picked up right where we left off when we graduated. Graduation was so very bittersweet for me. I am from Pittsburgh but vacation at Kelso Beach every year for the past 50 years, yes 50 years. My family loves it there. I remember it being a gay bar in the early 1970s when I was a kid. I also remember a mannequin in the second floor window dressed as a British soldier. I remember the loud music late at night when we stayed in a cottage named the "Edgewood" which is next to the Hotel. Years later it was sold and turned into a summer cottage, my parents knew the people who owned at the time but I don't remember their names. I do remember my niece being friends with their daughter who was the same age as my niece. When we stopped renting the "Edgewood" cottage my parents lost touch with the owners and the Hotel has since changed owners I think a couple of times. Funny thing is my family still refers to it as the "Hotel" even though it is a cottage now. What a great place to vacation, we have stayed in so many great cottages there over the years and made some great memories. My parents have since past away but I am so thankful for all the years they vacationed there and all the good times we have shared. In 1871 30 woman founded Sarah Reed. The original house was donated to Sarah Reed in 1871. The house still remains on the corner of 23rd and Sassafras.I think the house above did sit at the corner of 22nd and Sassafras. Later the house that sits on the corner of 23rd and Sass was called the Home of the Friendless. In the late 1890's the house on 23rd and Sass became The Old Ladie's Home. Sarah Reed eventually separated the houses for kids and old ladies. In 1986 the 2 centers were incorporated as separate non profit organizations. The current house on 23rd and sassafras was added on to in 1970 a building was added to the old house and went along Sassafras Street known as Reed Terrace. In 1994 we added on to the back of the old house and added more residential apartments. In 1990 we added on a new building that sits along 22nd Street known as Reed House which is our Skilled Care Building. We are currently in the planning stages to build a new 2 1/2 story building that will come off the end of our skilled care building and go over to Myrtle Street and across 23rd Street. The building should be started later this year into 2016. The new building will all have private rooms and our current killed Care will be remodeled into private rooms as well. We will remain to house the same amount of residents. Sarah Reed now owns the entire block from 22nd to 23rd Street and Sassafras over to Myrtle. So if you ride buy and see construction, you will know we are adding on. We we'll continue to carry on Sarah A. Reed's legacy.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2410297566472541708.post-34171456374466398342015-12-13T17:51:02.493-05:002015-12-13T17:51:02.493-05:00I had my son's picture taken there when he was...I had my son's picture taken there when he was a year old. I was 16 years old. On Thanksgiving morning, while it was still dark, I walked up to the corner of 29th and Holland, from our home at 234 East 28th Street, to collect my newspapers. Snow had started to fall, and I remember seeing the lovely, smooth white layer of snow, illuminated by street lights and unmarred by automobile traffic, covering 29th Street.
My route consisted of about 120 customers, stretching from Old French Road to the Glenwood Creek area west of State Street. By then, the snow had accumulated to several inches, but I didn't seem to mind it, and thought it was a bit fun trudging thru the snow.
When I finally delivered all my papers, about an hour and a half later, I noticed that Gaylord Sheldon, who lived on 30th Street, was preparing to deliver his newspapers, the Dispatch. I was not in a hurry to get home, so I walked along with him while he delivered his job.
By the time the snow stopped falling, it was at the top level of our front porch, which was about 3 steps above the sidewalk. That was a snowstorm I frequently remember, and am even proud of!
