Firch Baking Company Hot Bread Delivery

Firch Baking Company has a long history in Erie. This wholesale baking company had two locations in 1922, one at 1902 Cranberry and one at the corner of 4th and Walnut. At that time, George E. Firch was the secretary of the company. In 1976, Firch's was a subsidiary of the Kane-Miller Corp., and had a plant at 1220 West 20th Street, and a surplus store at 1250 Brown Avenue. Many of us used Ma-Made Bread to make a peanut butter and jelly or a bologna sandwich.

  1. There used to be a giant Firch's sign on top of a building across from the Warner Theater. You could see it as you drove North on State Street.

  5. Hey, my mother ate this bread growing up. She said she got a snake stuffed animal from the company for purchasing so many loaves. If anyone has any information about this, knows what I'm talking about, or the slightest chance where I could buy one please let me know. Please and thank you!

My father worked for Firch Baking Co. from 1952 until his death in 1971. He started out as a mechanic, then became a truck driver, making drop ship deliveries to warehouses in Dunkirk and Westfield NY. I remember going to the plant on Cranberry St. with him sometimes to get his pay check. We would always visit the 'cake room', where Fritzy, the supervisor, always gave me a cupcake! I also remember seeing the huge mixers where the bread was made, and the 'proofing' room where the dough was taken to rise. Oh, how I remember that smell! Many of my birthday cakes came from Firch's when I was a child, as well as our daily bread! I love the banana flips that they made, and often took them in my school lunch. Ah, yes, I remember it well!
